What is Arthritis?

Arthritis is inflammation of one or more joints. The joints are the area where two different bones meet. Joints function by moving the body parts connected by its bones. In addition to inflammation in the joints, those with arthritis often experience joint pain.

There are over 100 types of arthritis, making it the most common chronic illness in the United States. The causes of arthritis depend on the form. It can be based on injuries sustained or wear and tear of the cartilage (leading to osteoarthritis), metabolic abnormalities (such as gout), an overactive immune system (such as rheumatoid arthritis), infections and even hereditary factors.

The treatment of arthritis can vary, depending on the type. An accurate diagnosis increases the chances for successful treatment and is the best place to start. Treatments available may include physical therapy, splinting, cold pack application, paraffin wax dips, anti-inflammation medications, immune-altering medications, surgical procedures and even Chinese herbs. See your doctor for an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.

No matter what type you have, reducing your stress and adding exercise to your routine can help alleviate discomfort. The Arthritis Foundation offers great programs in all cities to help empower those with arthritis through aquatic exercise and self-help programs that can boost your mood and self-confidence. Their exercise plan is proven to strengthen muscles, improve flexibility, increase mobility, reduce pain and stiffness, and physician visits.

And, for those who have problems even just picking up a pen to write, my physician designed UGLee Pen is very effective due to its light weight and ultimate grip that almost grips you back, so, you need to expend little to no effort in order to write.
