Busting 4 Top Ergonomic Myths

Ergonomic-Office-PostureErgonomics is a favorite subject of mine, especially since the science of ergonomics helps you make small changes to your work environment that yield huge rewards in your health and well-being.

Cyndi Davis, a member of Ergonomic Edge, self-described as “a team of crazed, passionate ergonomists committed to improving the quality of your life and the productivity of your business,” has written some spot-on comments about ergonomics in her online article “4 Common Misconceptions about Office Ergonomics” that I’d like to share with you.

Cyndi says “Ergonomics is about people – their pain and their productivity, and about an integrated solution with products.” She rightly points out that in the past, health and safety management in businesses has overlooked the very real risks associated with unmanaged office ergonomics. Myths about office ergonomics continue to persist, despite 20 years of research and data suggesting viable alternatives.

The misconceptions that Cyndi lists are:

  1. The right chair will solve all of your problems.
    Wrong, says Cyndi – the right chair, while important, is just one element to be integrated into the entire ergonomic solution.
  2. Repetitive Motion is the #1 cause of ergonomic injury.
    Yes, says Cyndi, repetitive motion can and does cause discomfort, and even severe injury. But again, ergonomics is an integrated problem that has many factors.
  3. Office Ergonomics is a ‘hard sell’ in these tough economic times.
    The ergonomic approach, Cyndi points out, is about preempting injury, and thus lowering absenteeism and worker’s compensation claims, which a company cannot afford to ignore.
    And I would add that some simple ergonomic solutions can be very inexpensive but go a long way toward maintaining the health of the employee, such as simply changing to the use of an ergonomic pen like my great comfortable UGLee pen.
  4. Every employee needs the same Ergonomic tools.
    Wrong, says Cyndi. Well, actually, everyone does need the same tools, but not necessarily in the same way. “Ergonomic solutions are personal,” writes Cyndi. “An employee’s height and body size, health conditions, work functions and personal habits all contribute to and inform an Ergonomic solution.”
